After their loss in El Clasico, Barcelona will look to bounce back as they take on Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
On Saturday Barcelona were defeated by bitter rivals Real Madrid 2-1 in El Clasico in the Camp Nou. It was the first loss the Catalans have suffered since October and it was a stunner. They took the lead thanks to Pique but quickly gave up two goals to Karim Benzema and the winner from Cristiano Ronaldo. Even when Sergio Ramos was sent off after he picked up a second yellow, Barcelona still couldn’t capitalize. It was a bad loss but thankfully for the Catalans, it doesn’t hurt their title race challenge that much. Barcelona still lead Real Madrid by seven points with Real still in third place. Obviously things will need to really turn in Real’s favor to snatch the title from Barca.
Atletico Madrid, second in La Liga, did their job this weekend with a 5-1 thrashing of Real Betis. They are now six points back of Barcelona as Atletico look to keep fighting for the La Liga title. It was a good rebound after they lost to Sporting Gijon 2-1.
Here are five things to look for in this matchup.
Next: 5. Can Atletico cause problems on set pieces?
Barcelona’s defense was exposed against Real Madrid as Real took advantage of mistakes made by Barca defenders in the air. First it was a misjump by Pique that gave Karim Benzema a chance to volley a fantastic goal past Claudio Bravo for the equalizer.

More from Playing for 90

From Tigres to El Tri: Diego Cocca to succeed Martino

Lionel Messi’s brother hits out at Joan Laporta

FMF whittles El Tri list down from two to … five? But a foul was ruled against Bale, one that shouldn’t have been given, and Barcelona were saved. But then Dani Alves missed jumped on a cross that landed straight at the feet of Ronaldo in the box and we all know what happened next.
All of these problems in the air should be a worry to Luis Enrique as it can be something Atletico and take advantage of when it comes to set pieces. Although Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres won’t have an advantage of Pique when it comes to height, they can take advantage of the rest of the Barcelona defenders.
When it comes to set pieces where a lot more players are up in attack, only Sergio Busquets and Pique are the relatively tall players on the pitch. This has been a problem for Barcelona in the past and Atletico should take advantage of it. Given they are underdogs in this fixture, they should use their advantage in the air and in set pieces to try to catch a quick one on Barcelona.
Next: 4. He was pretty bad for the Catalans in what was their most important game to date. He missed a golden opportunity when he whiffed on a pass from Neymar in the first half. He had a wide open net and with Navas on the other side of the goal, just a slight touch would have sent the ball into the back of the net. But he whiffed and groans echoed across the Camp Nou.
He was also involved in an incident with Pepe where he seemed to elbow the defender on purpose. He was given just a yellow which seemed very light considering what he had done. He will also miss Barcelona’s next La Liga game against Real Sociedad due to yellow card accumulation.
Missed chances and getting in altercations is exactly what Barcelona didn’t want Suarez to do. Now he will have to rebound with a solid game against Atletico. It will be another tough battle for Suarez as he faces a more physical duo than Pepe and Sergio Ramos. Diego Godin will likely be matched up against Suarez and the Atletico captain will look to make him go through 90 minutes of torture.
Next: 3. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)

3. Can Atletico slow this game down?
This will be a clash between two very different styles. Barcelona love to play fast and get the game moving. Get the ball up to the trident of Suarez, Neymar, and Messi and go from there. Have Iniesta and Rakitic with support in the middle with Alba and Alves on the wings. Get the ball moving from side to side and control possession from kickoff. This style usually wears out opponents by around the 70 minute mark as all the passing and chasing around on defense can get to you.
Atletico are completely different. Diego Simeone’s men love to slow down the pace as they usually don’t try to control possession. They are perfectly fine with chasing the ball but love to make life hard for their opponent. Madrid are extremely disciplined at the back and usually don’t concede many goals as they have only allowed 15 goals in this season, good for first in Spain. After all that defending, Atletico can hit opponents on the counterattack like it’s nobody’s business. Outside of the two big clubs (Real and Barca) nobody does it better than Atletico Madrid.
If they are able to slow this game down and make it to the pace of their liking, they have a big chance at taking the first leg.
Next: 2. The counterattack goal against Arsenal in the first leg of the Round of 16 was just that. The Gunners had all the momentum and seemed destined to score but a turnover and a minute later, the ball was in the back of their net. Messi, Neymar, and Suarez are all great players and are great in space. One mistake or turnover and the ball is in the back of your net. Like clockwork.

The same can be applied to Atletico as they have a solid counterattack. Not as deadly as Barca’s, but they are effective. Yannick Ferreira Carrasco is a menace down the wing and will give problems to the Barcelona defense. Antoine Griezmann is having the season of his life and Fernando Torres has seen his career revive in Atleti. Koke will also be a problem for the Catalans as well. In those rare moments where Barcelona lose possession, Atletico must strike. Barcelona have gotten better at defending the counterattack but it’s still something they need to work on.
Next: 1. This could have been the final dagger in the La Liga race as Barcelona would have been up 13 points on Real and 9 on Atletico. But the win for Los Blancos give them a fighters chance of coming back. Not only did the loss hurt, but the fact that Barcelona were leading at one point, gave up two goals back to back, and were playing against a 10-man Real team that to hurt. This snapped the historic streak set by Barcelona for consecutive games unbeaten and they will have to bounce back quickly.
Barcelona haven’t faced a lot of adversity this season and this will be a huge mental test for them. Can they bounce back after a crushing loss? This game could be tricky as they will play in front of their home fans and against an opponent who loves to defend and will make Barcelona work for offense.
.theiaPostSlider_nav._lowerdisplay:none !importantRelated Story: 5 Barcelona vs. Real Madrid post-match thoughts
They can’t hang their heads especially considering that the two games are only two days apart.
